How we work

APPROACH

Empower Allergy Treatment Center believes in evidence-based, personalized care for individuals managing food allergies. We start with a comprehensive consultation to get to know you and your child. During the consultation, Dr. Laubach and her team will help you understand your child's diagnosis and how to reduce associated risks. After the consultation, patients choose a long-term program of care that will provide comprehensive education, personalized treatment plans, and ongoing support.

About our Practice

ABOUT

Empower Allergy Treatment Center believes in personalized care for individuals managing food allergies. We are considered “out of network” by insurance plans, which means that we develop treatment plans directly for your child’s unique needs, without the input of insurance companies. Although we are out-of-network, we provide a “superbill” that you can submit to your insurance company. Consultations and Programs can be paid through FSA or HSA accounts. Our pricing is transparent, reflecting the true cost of providing high quality, state-of-the-art care tailored to your needs. When you invest in one of our programs, you're not just receiving standard treatment - you're gaining a team dedicated to your well-being.

Dr. Susan Laubach, Pediatric Allergy Specialist

Is Empower Allergy Treatment Center right for you?

  • Dr. Susan Laubach has dedicated her career to treating patients with food allergies. In early 2000, she trained at the esteemed Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City with Dr. Hugh Sampson, then at Duke University with Dr. Wesley Burks. Drs. Sampson and Burks pioneered food allergy research and remain leaders in the field. Over her 20-year career, Dr. Laubach has cared for thousands of children with food allergies and their families. As co-director of the Food Allergy Center at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego, she helped found the Food Allergy Immunotherapy Center. As a faculty member at UCSD, she trains students, primary care providers, and even other allergy-immunology specialists about food allergy. She is a sought-after speaker nationally on the topic of food allergy and related conditions. Dr. Laubach has helped conduct over 20 clinical and basic science research studies on treatments for food allergy. She continues to lead food allergy research studies at the Allergy & Asthma Medical Group and Research Center.

  • Dr. Laubach believes that hearing the story of what happened to your child is the most important piece of information that will help her diagnose and treat your child's food allergy and related conditions such as eczema, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and chronic hives. At E.A.T., we make sure you have plenty of time to ask questions and understand the answers.

  • You may have seen your child have a severe reaction to food, and that memory haunts you. Even if the first reaction seemed mild, you’ve probably heard or read that the next reaction could be “life-threatening.” At E.A.T., we believe that knowledge is power. You will learn the facts about food allergies, get practical advice about how to avoid accidental exposures, feel confident that you can recognize the early signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, and know that you can promptly treat reactions if they were to occur.

  • More and more data are available that show that giving small amounts of a food under medical supervision can

    • increase the amount of food a person can tolerate

    • decrease the severity of reactions to those foods

Immunotherapy (“IT”) is also known as “desensitization” or “microdosing.” There are several routes that can be used:

    • Oral (OIT)

    • Sublingual, or under the tongue (SLIT)

    • Epicutaneous, or through a patch on the skin (EPIT) - currently only available through a clinical trial

We will help you understand the pros and cons of OIT, SLIT, participating in a clinical trial, or "Empowered Avoidance," and offer a program [link to the treatment/our programs page] that is the best fit for your child and family.

  • We guarantee your child will start OIT within 1 month after your consultation.

  • Although there is only one FDA-approved OIT product (link to www.palforzia.com), many high-quality clinical trials of OIT have been published in peer-reviewed medical journals, especially for peanut, egg, and milk (Efficacy and safety of oral immunotherapy for peanut, cow's milk, and hen's egg allergy: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (nih.gov)). Vetted protocols have been published for other foods as well (A Review of Shared Decision-Making, Published Protocols, and Post-desensitization Strategies in Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) | Current Allergy and Asthma Reports (springer.com)). Emerging data on SLIT and EPIT have also been published with similar efficacy rates as OIT over time. At E.A.T., our programs are based on evidence-based protocols.

  • You need help now. You have questions. You want an accurate diagnosis. You want your child to start treatment. The E.A.T. Center will offer you an appointment within the next 2 weeks. Get answers now at E.A.T.
